The Museum displays paintings, drawings, prints and relics covering the period of Italy's history comprised between Napoleon Bonaparte's campaign in Italy (1796) and Rome's annexation to the Kingdom of Italy (1870). Its origin dates to a group of original documents on the facts of the Risorgimento collected for the general Exposition of Turin in 1884 and then displayed in Milan's Giardini Pubblici.

In 1896 it was transferrred to the Rocchetta in the Castello Sforzesco. After the bombings of 1943 it was hosted for a while in the ground floor of Casa Manzoni until the last moved to its actual seat. Together with the Museo di Storia Contemporanea and the Museo di Milano, it forms the Raccolte Storiche del Comune di Milano, which also count a Library and Archives, all in the same building.
